I’ve just RMA’d my 2nd Passport drive in a year.
These drives suck. That’s all you need to know.
There is have truth to what people say on here. I read the reviews, and I still decided to buy it. Yes the USB cord is not a standard one. BUT it is not lose like some people say. I tugged on it and it is very sturdy. But it is true that the backup software still pops up. The virtual CD can be stopped buy downloading the firmware.
Over all I think it would be a great companium for my laptop.
I have this product and there seems to be a lot of confusion out there:
Not a proprietary cable – This product uses “micro” USB which IS a standard and you can see early adoption in the cell phone industry. In fact, many new cell phones use this cable to charge and connect to computers. So with WD’s adoption, you could essentially use 1 cable for your phone and external drive. Good stuff
Smartware – Not my cup of tea, but WD has been pushing out updates to hide and or customize the usage of this software. I think smartware was designed for the general user, but for tech enthusiast, you can turn it off now which is a great thing.
Form factor – this hands down is the smallest/sexiest drive out there. No other manufacturer has a hard drive this small or good looking.
I am grateful for this article. I was wrong to choose it. He arrived on time and was what I expected. I recommend 100%
This must be a slow drive, since I can not find RPM or CACHE sizes for this disk in any advertizement or in WD’s overview or the disk’s manual.
They’re not proud of the disk speed performance, so they dont include it?
